Week 3

Hi all,

It's been another busy week in Room 19 with lots of learning. Some children have already moved up in fractions which is amazing after just three weeks. I am very impressed!

This week students learnt about New Zealand currency and others around the world. They learnt how much they get for each New Zealand dollar and went on a shopping spree in a country of their choice.

In writing they wrote instructions to play a game or make something. Yesterday they made fruit kebabs :-)

Keep bringing the permission slips and money in for Tristar Gymnastics. Thanks to those who have already done so.

Stars of the Week were Pari Patel and Abtha Abdul Razack for their progress in maths. The PB4L draw was won by Levi Abernethy.

Week 2

Hi all,

Phew ... what a week! I feel like I've been swimming under water all week and have just come up for air. Book Week was a HUGE success with lots of fun activities. Some of the highlights were the PJ and Popcorn night on Wednesday, the Scholastics Book Fair, Clifford the Dog's visit on Thursday and the Book Character Parade today. I hope it has given your child a new appreciation for reading. Among the messages conveyed to students this week were "to improve in reading you simply have to read". The more they read, the better they will get. Thanks to all the parents who helped throughout the week, especially in preparing the amazing costumes and outfits in today's Book Character Parade. I could see a lot of effort had been made. Congratulations Audrina Singh who won the prize for best dressed.

Room 19 has had a Monopoly competition all week to introduce this term's topic "Money makes the world go round". Monopoly is a great representation of life, particularly the latest game with Eftpos and million dollar-plus properties. Well done Tegan White who won the competition with more than $10,000 and eight streets - a real entrepreneur.

Our trip to the Tip Top Factory has been confirmed for September 19th. More information will follow. Thanks to all those parents who offered their help.

Week 1

Welcome to Term Three.

It is great to be back at school and hear all about your child's holiday. There has been lots of talk about the exciting activities and they wrote about one of them.

Gymnastics starts next week and later in the term your child will do athletics. 

At this stage I am hoping to take Room 19 to the Tip Top Factory on September 18th. Before I confirm this trip I would like to know who may be able to help and bring their car. We'd need five cars plus mine in order to transport everyone. If you can come and have a car please email me khenderson@newwindsor.school.nz with how many children fit in your car.

Welcome to Term 3!

Today's newsletter in case you didn't get it ...

Welcome back to Term Three! I hope you and your family had a refreshing break. I spent time with my mother in Thames and did day trips around our beautiful city. Remember to check the classroom blog each week for updates. You should be getting this on email for your convenience – let me know if this isn’t happening. With a new term comes lots of new, exciting things for your child to learn. I’ll tell you more about these in this newsletter and throughout the term. Stars of the Week in the last week of Term Two were Tuipulotu Palanite and Lola Davis for their amazing art work. PB4L draw winners were Esha Patel and Abtha Abdul Razack.

Homework

Your child is expected to do at least 10 minutes reading, practise their spelling words and basic facts each night. They have access to Studyladder (literacy and numeracy) and Sumdog (numeracy) websites. I have also signed them up to Sunshine Classics, a reading website. A home study sheet has gone home today and your child has two weeks to complete it.

Reading

Readers went home today. Your child can read these at home as well as books you have at home. I encourage you to take them to the public library to give them exposure to lots of different texts. A big focus this term will be comprehension and retelling/summarising main events. You can help by asking lots of questions about what they read at home.

Writing

This term your child will learn to write procedural texts – these are a step-by-step guide on how to do or make something. You can familiarise them with this type of text by following a recipe in the kitchen. They will also write explanations – how something works or why it happens. Topics will include objects they can relate to e.g. bey blades, scooters and bicycles.  Poetry will continue throughout the term as normal.

Maths

Your child may be in a new group this term as we change our focus to ratios and proportions. I’d like to reiterate if they move down a group it doesn’t mean they have gone backwards in maths. For some children they’re better at multiplication and division than ratios and proportions. This doesn’t necessarily change their global stage. Your child is learning about geometry in strand this term.

Inquiry

This term students will learn about the ways in which people participate in economic activities and about the consumption, production, and distribution of goods and services. They will develop an understanding of their role in the economy and of how economic decisions affect individuals and communities.

Week 10

Hi all,

This is my final blog for Term 2. The children have had a relaxing last day with a spelling bee, maths quiz, plays and a treat while they watched movies. The classroom is all packed up and we're ready for a well-earned holiday.

PB4L draw winners were Esha Patel and Abtha Abdul Razack. Stars of the Week were Lola Davis and Tuipulotu Palanite for their amazing art work. I was impressed with the overall standard of this week's art using colourful pastels on black paper. Next time you're in Room 19 check it out! After the holidays I'll upload photos of it here for you to see.

This week we had the Senior Swimming Carnival and the children had a lot of fun. Sofia Hamid was the shining star, winning all her races. Well done Sofia!
