Science in a Van

Hi all,

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 19 September 2019

Week 9

Hi all,

I hope you have managed to get out in the sun lately. I love this time of year as it's not too hot and you can be in the sun without a hat or sunblock and not get burnt. This will change next term though when hats are compulsory for your child when in the playground.

There is just one week left of Term Three and students are starting to get tired. Please reinforce my message at home: Students must make an effort to stay on task and be nice to each other for just five more days. We are nearly there!

Stars of the Week are Chethan Krishna and Api Talamaivao. The PB4L draw was won by Aesia Shah Wazir and Muhammad Baig.

Have a great weekend! Go the All Blacks.

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 12 September 2019

Have a great weekend!

Week 7

Hi all,

Well we've reached the end of another week and it's hard to believe there are only three weeks left of Term Three! Swimming lessons have finished and next week we resume our usual routines.

The finishing touches are being put to the Calendar Art. Order forms have gone home  - it's $10 for calendars, $10 for cards, $14 for diaries, $12 for mouse mats and $10 for sketch pads. A great Christmas present for rellies! Orders must be placed by September 27th. Once done, I'll upload the finished art on here for you to view.

Stars of the Week are Leo Tangianau-Kirianu and Rhea Chhana. The PB4L draw was won by Sunny Cho.

Have a great weekend!

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 29 August 2019

Week 6

Hi all,

Swimming lessons started this week and there have been many students not bringing their togs. As it is part of the NZ Curriculum, swimming is compulsory and all students must do it unless they have a good reason not to. This must be supported by a note from their parent/caregiver.

The Stars of the Week are Sania Sharifi and Dulina Palliya Ralalage Don for working diligently and using their 'inside voice'. Dulina is new to New Windsor School. He has settled in quickly and moved up two reading levels already. The PB4L draw was won by Jeremaiah Wirepa-Terei.

Have a great weekend.

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 22 August 2019

Week 5

Hi all,

Swimming lessons start on Monday and go for two weeks. Please make sure your child brings their togs, a towel and goggles if they have them. Auckland is surrounded by water and it's so important for children to be able to swim.

Room 7 is in the middle of their calendar art. When complete you will be able to purchase it as a calendar, diary or mouse pad. It's a great fundraiser for the school and great idea for Christmas presents for rellies.

Stars of the Week are Lucretia Day and Mohammad Amran Safi for working diligently and using their 'inside voices'. The PB4L draw was won by Jeremaiah Wirepa-Turei.

Have a great weekend.

Mr Henderson.

Chewing/bubble gum

Hi all,
Just a friendly reminder to please not give your child chewing gum or bubble gum to bring to school. We do not allow it here. If any child is caught with it they will be picking up rubbish at lunch time.
Regards,
Mr Henderson.

Thursday 15 August 2019

Week 4

Hi all,

Wow! We are nearly half way through the term and there is still lots to do. On Monday I am taking some Year 6 students to a science and technology competition at St Kentigern Boys' School. On Tuesday some Year 6 students will visit Blockhouse Bay Intermediate. On Wednesday students will represent New Windsor School at the Winter Sports Field Day, which was postponed this week due to the weather.

Stars of the Week are Sunny Cho and Markell Morris-Taualofa for their hard work and using their 'inside voices'. This is always a struggle when students are excited and there are so many in a classroom. Well done Sunny and Markell! The PB4L draw winner is Faryal Turkistani.

Have a great weekend and stay dry.

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 8 August 2019

Week 3

Hi all,

I don't know about you but I am fed up with this wet weather. It is unsettling for the children too, being stuck indoors all day. There is still money outstanding for author Stu Duval. Also, some students need to return permission slips for the Winter Sports Field Day next Wednesday, Blockhouse Bay Intermediate trip and Tri Star Gym. Please return these ASAP.

Stars of the Week are Paula Daunakamakama for his fantastic writing and Esther Faamoe for her enthusiasm in delivering milk. The PB4L draw winner is Aesia Wazir Shah.

Have a great weekend!

Thanks to all the parents who came along last night to view your child's spectacular writing. I know how impressed you all were with the high standard. Remember it's the big finale tomorrow - the Book Character Parade. Your child can come along as a book character and join in the parade.

Stars of the Week were Faryal Turkistani and Jiya Shah for their impressive writing. Lucretia Day won the PB4L draw for the fifth time. Well done girls!

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 25 July 2019

Book Week/Writers' Festival

Hi all,

Next week is the annual Book Week/Writers' Festival. As part of this we are being visited by author-illustrator Stu Duval on Monday. There is a cost of $4 which is very affordable and I know, having seen Stu before, your child will get a lot out of his visit. Thanks to those who have paid. If you haven't can you please do so tomorrow? Your child will need to return the permission slip too.

Week 9

Hi all,

I hope you had a great week. I am loving this winter sunshine and it's meant to continue until Monday. Students of Room 7 had another busy week - writing poems about the Land of Woo, reading and answering comprehension questions, performing plays and learning strategies for solving multiplication and division problems. The disco starts at 7pm tonight - get your groove on!

A reminder that school finishes at 2pm on Monday and Tuesday next week for Student Involved Conferences. If you haven't booked to see me you still have time.

Stars of the Week are Suki Murthi and Jitesh Anand for their great poems. The PB4L draw winner was Karthik Padma. Congratulations!

Enjoy your weekend in the sun.

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 20 June 2019

Week 8

Hi all,

Well that is the end of another week. Our technology project is coming along and Marigold is looking happy. In reading this week students performed plays and answered comprehension questions. In writing students wrote limerick poems and information reports. In maths students learnt different strategies to solve multiplication and division problems. The Stars of the Week are Sunny Cho and Sania Sharifi for their research on houses. The PB4L winner is Faryal Turkistani.

Enjoy your weekend!

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 13 June 2019

Week 7

Hi all,

I can't believe there is only three weeks of this term left - with so much still to do! Reports are now finished and with principals. These will go home at the end of Week 9. By now you will have received information on Student Involved Conferences in Week 10. Get in quick as slots are filling up fast and it's first in-first served. At these conferences we will talk about your child's learning and you can ask any questions you have about their report.

It's that time of the year when many are absent with colds and flus (I have been away myself this week with a bad head cold!). This year there seem to be a lot more away than usual. These illnesses are easily prevented if your child washes their hands regularly and when they cough or sneeze they do it into their arm, not hand.

Stars of the Week are Rhea Channa and Lily-Rose Maangi for their amazing writing. The PB4L draw winner is Sania Sharifi. Congratulations to all of Week 7's stars.

Have a great weekend!

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 6 June 2019

Week 6

Hi all,

Thanks so much for all your good wishes. It has been a really tough time as some of you may appreciate having lost loved ones yourself. Many people have told me "you never get over it but you get through it". So true! I feel stronger every day and, although I'll never forget mum, I am at a stage where I can get on with my life. Thanks again for everyone's kind words and your children's sympathy cards filled with love.

It has been a funny old week with the unsettled weather which, in turn, affects students as they can't get outside at breaks to play. This can make it difficult to focus on their work and many have unleashed energy. Despite all this, students in Room 7 have had a good week and got through their work. We finished the week today by making waffles - learning about measurement for maths.

The Stars of the Week were Lucretia Day and Adam Wells for their writing. The PB4L draw winner was Angus Ye.

Have a great weekend - stay dry and warm!

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 30 May 2019

Week 5

Hi all,

Apologies for the lack of blog updates lately. I have actually been away the last two weeks after my mum passed away. I am back to school on Tuesday. Work is progressing on our technology project - enhancing Marigold's house. Unfortunately, I haven't received any contributions from parents so we have had to downscale our plans. At this stage we will be painting murals on the walls of her enclosure and some basic modifications, including ramps and other obstacles for her to navigate. We will be painting in groups of four and parent help would be great to supervise. If you're free at any stage over the next four weeks let me know.

I am in the midst of writing progress reports which will go home at the end of Week 9. Information will go home regarding student involved conferences in Week 10 when we can discuss these further.

Have a great long weekend and try to stay warm.

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 2 May 2019

Week 1

Hi all,
Stars of the Week were Faryal Turkistani for her great reading and Paula Daunakamakama for being an awesome teacher's helper. The PB4L draw was won by Sunny Cho.
Have a great weekend.
Mr Henderson.

Term Two overview

Hi all,

Welcome back to a brand new term! I hope you had a relaxing holiday with your family. I had a busy time between Auckland and Thames where my mum lives. This is going to be a busy term so keep an eye on this blog for information.

One thing I'll need your help with is topic where students will learn about different types of technology and make their own. We will be building ramps and modifying Marigold's enclosure. We will also close part of the school rabbit's shelter. The topic is called "Trash to treasure: Technology in our world". Throughout the term I will be looking for donations and recycled materials. At this stage I know we will need timber for supporting beams and ramps and clear plastic for the roof. Please email me if you are able to help. When it comes to doing the work parents with building and art expertise would be welcomed in class to help students.

Important dates for this term:
Week 1: Cross Country, May 2nd
Week 3: Cluster Cross Country at Blockhouse Bay Reservce, May 14th
Week 7: Cluster Swimming Carnival at Cameron Pools, June 12th
Week 9: Reports go home, June 25th
Week 9: Disco, June 28th
Week 10: Parent-teacher meetings, July 1st and 2nd
Week 10: Portrait and sibling photos, July 2nd.

Have a great week.

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 11 April 2019

Week 10

Hi all,

We made it! It has been a very busy term with the culmination of our term's work showcased in Pasifika: Feel the beat today. I hope you enjoyed it if you were there. The children certainly enjoyed learning their dance and performing it for you and the rest of the school.

Stars of the Week were Markell Morris-Taualofa, Leo Tangianau-Kirianu, Kingston Veaila and Api Talamaivao. These boys have been focused on their work, showing a 'can do' attitude and using their 'inside voice'. Well done!

School has now finished for Term One and will reopen at 8.30am on April 29th. See you then!

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 4 April 2019

Week 9

Hi all,

What a busy fortnight! Sorry I didn't post a blog last Friday but it was the last thing on my mind after being away at the Year 6 camp all week. Students had a blast and the Year 5s seemed to enjoy themselves too. They learnt lots of new things outside the classroom and hopefully have everlasting memories.

Today was "Give it a go" in the pool where students participated in a number of races. They did well.

Next week is the last week of school for Term One. There is a special dance assembly on Friday to finish the term - students will showcase their learning about Pasifika.

Stars of the Week were Mustafa Eskaf and Jiya Shah. The PB4L draw winner was Adam Wells.

Have a great weekend!

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 21 March 2019

Week 7

Hi all,

The EOTC (Education Outside The Classroom) week is nearly here! Please read the information carefully your child has brought home, especially with regards to times leaving school on Monday. We can't wait for anyone!

Students had another busy week in Room 7. They published their writing and did lots of fun activities in reading - flax weaving, Venn Diagrams and plays. In maths they worked with decimals and used place value to add and subtract.

Stars of the Week were Adam Wells and Lucretia Day. The winner of the PB4L draw was Mohammad Amran Safi.

Have a great weekend and I'll see you in a week (unless you're coming to the Year 6 camp on Monday).

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 14 March 2019

Week 6

Hi all,

It's nice to see the summer weather is continuing - apparently the mercury reached 28 degrees in Auckland yesterday! That's warm for March.

It's been a great week in Room 7 with lots of learning. Some students don't have a ruler - please ask your child and if they need one get it this weekend. This would have been particularly useful today when students created bar graphs to record data from our height chart.

In reading this week students practiced their summarising, comprehension and decoding skills.

In writing they wrote about a moment in time, painting a picture for the reader with adverbs and adjectives.

There is a meeting for Year 6 camp parents on Tuesday, 6.30pm, in Room 17. Year 5 parents are meeting at the same time in Room 12. There is just one week to go and students are starting to get excited! It will be a fun week.

Stars of the Week are Thomas Martin and Aesia Wazir Shah. The PB4L draw was won by Api Talamaivao. This week's Principal's Award went to Adam Wells for his quick thinking in maths.

Have a great weekend!

Mr Henderson

Thursday 7 March 2019

Week 5

Hi all,

We have reached the end of another busy week in Room 7. Students started maths rotations this week. Pentagons, Ovals and Squares added and subtracted fractions, renaming first. Triangles made 100s using 10s and 1000s using 100s.

In writing they wrote alliteration poems. Inquiry this term is Pasifika and today we discussed a dance we will do with our buddy class in Week 10. Practice starts next week.

Some camp forms are still outstanding. Please return these on Monday as we are going in two weeks and need to start organising food etc. If your child isn't going they still need to bring the form back.

Stars of the Week are Sania Sharifi and Lily-Rose Maangi. The PB4L draw winner is Sunny Cho.

Have a great weekend!

Mr Henderson.

Thursday 28 February 2019

Welcome to Room 7's blog

Dear parents/caregivers,

Welcome to the first of many blogs. I see this as a "fifth wall" of the classroom with your child's work displayed here and important information. I will try and update it every week so watch this space. Your email addresses will be loaded onto the system so you will be notified when a blog is posted.

Students of Room 7 have hit the ground running with lots of learning. We are gearing up for the camp in Week 8. This will be an exciting week and I know some of the students are also anxious about being away from home for the first time. When they return you'll see a big change in them.

Stars of the Week are Jitesh Anand and Karthik Padma who are both new to New Windsor School and have settled in really well.

The community picnic starts at 5.30pm tonight. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Mr Henderson.
